"Never You Mind" by Semisonic

In this post, I'll be writing about a song I don't listen to anymore by a band I can only name three songs by. That's really all the introduction I think I can give, so I'll get right into it.

I can't imagine many people know any songs by Semisonic except for their hit “Closing Time." That was definitely all I knew by them for a long time. While I liked the song, I had grown tired of it due to hearing it on the radio too often (this is probably going to be a common theme throughout this blog). I liked their style, however, so I looked into their other stuff. There wasn’t too much that I was really into, but I found one song that blew me away.

Looking back at it, I don’t know exactly why “Never You Mind” struck me as such an amazing song. I don’t dislike it now, but it doesn’t exactly rank up there with “Good Vibrations” for me. At the time, the piano part was catchy and the marching, strong drums gave me something I could nod my head to. I think besides the fact that I listened to it too much and got tired of it, the vocals follow the instruments too closely for my liking. I’m not a huge fan of when there’s a guitar or piano or whatever playing a melody and the vocals follow that melody closely. It’s why I don’t really like “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones and it’s probably why I don’t look back as fondly on this song now.

But those are two issues I have and they’re certainly not universal. So if you don’t mind the instrumental melody and the vocal melody matching up like that, I’d check the song out. It’s certainly interesting. I guess this is where I would suggest covers of the song or other work by the artist. I have yet to find a professional cover of it, so I can't provide anything there. Seeing as I'm not a Semisonic fan, there aren't many songs of theirs I would personally suggest. "Chemistry" is alright, I guess. And if you haven't heard "Closing Time" yet, give it a listen.
